Der neue Renault Twingo ist für Jamie einfach der Goldstandard der Neuauflage eines Retro-Modells, wie sie Renault auch schon beim Renault 4 und Renault 5 geschafft hat. Es ist nicht bloß ein generischer SUV mit dem Twingo-Namen angeklebt – stattdessen ist es von Grund auf als Hommage an das Original von 1992 entwickelt worden.

Retro aber doch modern

Schon bei der Enthüllung des Konzeptautos 2024 war Jamie vor Ort und hatte dementsprechend hohe Erwartungen, schließlich hatte auch der Renault 5 es fast unverändert von Konzeptauto zur Serienproduktion geschafft. Und auch beim Twingo hat sich dies bewahrheitet.

Direkt nach dem der neue Twingo präsentiert wurde, wurde Jamie vom gewohnten, freundlich grinsendem Gesicht begrüßt. Die Synthese aus Retro und modernem Auto ist Renault auf alle Fälle gelungen. Die kurze Motorhaube, die drei Lufteinlässe oben links und die runden LED-Leuchten machen ihn unverkennbar zu einem Twingo. Auch wenn die drei Einlässe nun nicht mehr funktionstüchtig sind, sondern hauptschlich als Designelemente dienen.

Auch das Profil gefällt Jamie gut mit den optionalen 18-Zoll Felgen. Auch am Heck finden sich die runden Leuchten, hier allerdings mit einer kleinen Finne über ihnen, die die Aerodynamik verbessern sollen. Jamie ist auf alle Fälle begeistert: “Er sieht aus wie das Auto der Neunziger, aber gleichzeitig ist er hochmodern.”

Hightech und Stil im Innenraum

Auch im Inneren versprüht der Twingo den Charme des ikonischen Vorgängers. Türeinlagen in Wagenfarbe spielen auf den ersten Twingo an, der ohne Innenverkleidung an den Türen kam und dementsprechend sein Blech zeigte. Mit passenden Farben zur Außenlackierung ist der Twingo einfach ein stimmiger Auftritt innen wie außen.

Auch andere Elemente wie der überdimensionierte Knopf für die Warnblinker haben es Jamie angetan. Insgesamt begrüßt unser Kollege es sehr, dass Renault noch physische Knöpfe für die Klimasteuerung verbaut hat und sich nicht vom Touch-Trend mitreißen lässt. Es gibt auch zahlreiche Individualisierungsoptionen, so kannst du beispielsweise deinen Gangwahlhebel wie im Renault 5 anpassen und dabei zwischen bunten Farben auswählen. Ein praktisches Clip-System sorgt auch dafür, dass du Accessoires wie etwa zusätzliche Becherhalter oder weitere Stauflächen anbringen kannst.

Der neue Twingo kommt mit einem 7-Zoll großen Digitalinstrument welches mit spielerischen Grafiken den Charakter des elektrischen Flitzers gerecht wird. Mittig gibt es einen 10 Zoll großen Infotainment-Screen und baut auf das bewährte Google-System wie man es aus anderen Renault-Modellen kennt. Apple CarPlay und Android Auto sind ebenfalls Teil der Serienausstattung.

Bei der Verarbeitung hatte Jamie auch nichts auszusetzen und das obwohl das Auto weniger als 20.000 € kosten soll. Zu viel Komfort darf man nicht erwarten, aber alles fühlt sich gut und solide an. Einziger Kritikpunkt laut Jamie war das hohe Armaturenbrett. Zusammen mit der etwas nach hinten geschobenen Sitzposition und einer kleinen Windschutzscheibe erschien die Sicht nach vorne etwas eingeschränkt, aber ob es sich wirklich als hinderlich erweist, wird man erst auf den ersten Fahrveranstaltungen beurteilen können.

Die Rückbank ist für zwei Personen ausgelegt und bietet überraschend viel Platz, solange du sie ganz nach hinten verschiebst. Obwohl Jamie 1,90 m misst, hatte er ausreichend Platz im Fond mit dem Fahrersitz auf seiner Fahrposition. Oben herum wurde des etwas zu eng für seinen Kopf, aber der Twingo bietet tatsächlich mehr Platz als etwas ein Mini Cooper oder ein Dacia Spring. Für Fahrten, die knapp eine Stunde dauern, dürfte es sich auch hinten gut reisen.

Im Kofferraum finden bis zu 360 Liter Platz, 52 Liter mehr als beim Dacia Spring und es gibt einen doppelten Boden für deine Ladekabel. Einen Frunk konnte Jamie zu seiner Enttäuschung leider nicht finden, aber bei einem so kleinen Wagen wie dem Twingo ist das verzeihlich. Der herausnehmbare Boden ist zweigeteilt, sodass du nicht alles aus dem Kofferraum entfernen musst, um an das Fach heran zu kommen.

City ja, Roadtrip eher nicht

Für den Twingo wird zunächst nur eine Motor- und Batteriekombination angeboten. Der 82 PS Motor sprintet in 12,1 Sekunden auf 100 km/h, nicht gerade rekordverdächtig, aber mehr als ausreichend um im Stadtverkehr zurechtzukommen.

Eine 28 kWh-Batterie treibt den Motor an mit einer Reichweite von bis zu 260 km Reichweite, das sind knapp 40 km mehr als beim Dacia Spring, nicht ganz so weit wie es ein Leapmotor T03 schafft und auch circa 60 km weniger als der Citroen e-C3.

Der Twingo ist für Jamie eindeutig als Stadtauto konzipiert worden, schließlich gibt es nicht einmal DC-Schnellladen als Teil der Standardausstattung, stattdessen nur einen 6,6 kW AC-Lader, der 4 Stunden und 15 Minuten braucht um von 10 auf 100 % zu laden. Für das Aufladen zuhause über Nacht mehr als ausreichend.

Wenn es doch raus aus der Stadt gehen sollte, benötigst du das Ladepaket mit einem 50 kW-Schnellader, und einem 11 kW AC-Lader. Damit schaffst du die Ladung von 10 bis 80 % in 30 Minuten am Schnelllader und die 10 bis 100 % über AC in 2 Stunden und 35 Minuten.

Das beste E-Auto 2025?

Die genauen Preise für den Renault Twingo sind noch nicht bekannt, aber Renault hat bereits angekündigt, dass der Preis unter 20.000 € beginnen soll. Aber trotz einiger noch offener Fragen ist der Twingo für Jamie die Premiere des Jahres bei den Elektrowagen: “Ich kann es kaum erwarten diese elektrischen Stadtflitzer auf unseren Straßen zu entdecken, sie sehen fantastisch aus im Vergleich zum Ozean von langweiligen, grauen SUVs.”

New Renault Twingo first impressions: design
I was at the reveal of the Renault Twingo concept car back in 2024, and having seen the Renault 5 go from sketch to showroom pretty much unchanged, I was confident that the Twingo would be no different.

And I’m delighted to report, I was right. As soon as the covers were pulled off the new Twingo and it showed its friendly, smiling face, I was hooked. It manages to look just like the ‘90s hatch, while also looking super-modern at the same time.

The stubby bonnet and round LED leadlights make it instantly recognisable as a Twingo, as do the three vents on the bonnet. These aren’t real though like they were on the original, nor do they hide a charging display like on the concept. The middle one does serve a purpose though – it hides the windscreen washer fluid filler cap because the bonnet is fixed in place.

Moving to the side, the car I’m with has the optional 18-inch alloy wheels. All models come with steel wheels and plastic covers as standard, and you pay extra to upgrade to alloys. That’s in Europe at least; UK specifications may be slightly different.

Moving to the rear and you have taillights which mimic the lamps up front. If you’re wondering why they have a little fin on top, it’s not to channel the car’s inner reptile. They actually channel air around the rear of the car for better aerodynamics.

New Renault Twingo first impressions: interior, tech and practicality
The new Twingo’s interior is just as funky as the exterior. You get body-coloured inserts on the doors, a nod to the first Twingo with all of its exposed interior metalwork, and the dashboard is paint matched on top-spec cars as well.

You have other cool touches like the massive hazard light button and the bright carpet mats to further brighten things up, but there are still physical knobs for the climate control which I like to see.

There are plenty of personalisation options as well. Like on the Renault 5, you can change the cap on the gear selector for a more brightly coloured one, and there are loads of different accessories you can clip into the centre console. There are options for additional cupholders, fold-away shopping bags and even a central armrest with a storage area inside.

All cars come with a 7.0-inch digital driver’s display, which has its own playful graphics, as well as a 10-inch infotainment screen. It’s running very similar software to the one you get in other Renault models, such as the 5, meaning it’s pretty easy to use, and top-spec cars get Google’s voice assistant built in. You get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard.

Build quality is good as well. This is a car which will cost less than £20,000, so you can’t expect too many plush plastics, but it all feels nice and solid. The only minor gripe I had was the view forward. I’ll have to wait until I drive the car to pass full judgement, but it felt to me like the high dashboard led to a pretty narrow windscreen, and you sit quite far away from it as well. Couple that with the sloping bonnet and it could be tricky to judge where the corners are in tight spaces.

Moving to the rear you have two individual sliding seats, and with these pushed all the way back there’s actually a decent amount of space. I’m not going to pretend it’s a limo, but I can get in behind my driving position at 6’3” and be reasonably comfortable. Headroom is a bit tight for me, but for a tiny city car it’s impressive – much more spacious than a Mini Cooper or a Dacia Spring. I’d be quite comfortable for an hour or so in the back.

You get up to 360-litres of boot space with those seats all the way forward, 52 litres more than a Dacia Spring, and there’s a big storage area under the floor for your charging cables. I’d prefer a front boot, but on a car this small I can forgive the Twingo. The boot floor also lifts in two pieces so you don’t have to take all of your stuff out to get under there.
New Renault Twingo batteries, range and motors
There’s just one motor and battery combination available for the Twingo. You get an 82hp electric motor powering the front wheels, meaning it can do 0-62mph in 12.1 seconds. That’s not blistering, but it’s nippy enough for zipping around town.

Feeding that motor is a 28kWh battery, and the claimed range is up to 163 miles. Compared to other tiny city EVs, that’s 23 miles more than a Dacia Spring, two miles fewer than a Leapmotor T03 and it’s 37 miles less than a Citroen E-C3. It’s plenty of range for driving around town though, and it should cover most people’s daily commutes.

Renault clearly thinks Twingo customers will be sticking to urban routes as well, because you don’t get DC fast charging as standard. All cars get a 6.6kW AC charger which can take you from 10-100% in 4 hours and 15 minutes. That’s fine for charging overnight if you have access to a charger at home.

If you do want to venture beyond the urban jungle semi-regularly, you can opt for a charging pack which includes a 50kW DC fast charger which can take you from 10-80% in 30 minutes. It also upgrades your AC charger to 11kW, dropping your 10-100% charge time to 2 hours and 35 minutes. That could prove handy if you come across a slow charger in a car park while you’re on a shopping spree.

Exact prices for the new Twingo is yet to be confirmed, but it will start from less than £20,000. Given that the Dacia Spring starts from £15,000, I’d say the Twingo will cost around £17,500. Once you’ve added the alloy wheels and the fast charging pack, which let’s be honest, you probably will, it may get closer to that £20,000 figure.

Final pricing and UK specs will be revealed closer to the start of sales, which will be at the end of next year. First deliveries are expected in early 2027. I for one can’t wait to see these happy little electric cars zipping around on our streets. I think it looks fantastic in a sea of boring, grey SUVs.
